Indian Premier League 2024 has witnessed never-before-seen fandom. Be it trolling Hardik Pandya at the ground or taking jibes at each other on social media, the fans have left no area uncovered to reach the extremism of showcasing their fandom. However, an incident from Kolhapur’s Hanmantwadi Area has left everyone shocked as the fan war has caused the death of a person.

The 63-year-old was from the Bandupant Tibile, and he succumbed to the injuries caused by an altercation over an IPL match. As the Mumbai Indians took on Sunrisers Hyderabad recently, the victim, who was a Chennai Super Kings fan, expressed joy over the wicket of Rohit Sharma led the fans to beat him with a stick and caused severe injuries. The incident took place at Hanmantwadi in Karveer Taluka of Kolhapur district on Wednesday night.

Fan wars should never go this ugly a route: Ravi Ashwin

Fans of Pandya and Rohit have taken the warfare to different levels altogether. Pandya was booed when he entered the Wankhede Stadium for the toss, and placards calling him disloyal were displayed by the GT fans after he was traded to MI. Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin condemned the acts and called for subtlety within the communions and stressed that at the end of the Pandya is an Indian Cricket Team player, who plays for the country.

“Fan wars should never go this ugly a route. One should remember which country these players represent — our country. So, then, what warrants a cricketer getting booed? I don’t understand. If you don’t like a player and boo a player, why should a team come out to issue a clarification. This is cricket, and there is a prevalent cinema culture. I know there are things like marketing, positioning and branding. I agree with all that. But I don’t believe in all this, but it’s not wrong to indulge in either,” Ashwin said on his YouTube Channel.

“Sourav Ganguly played under Sachin Tendulkar and vice versa. These two have both played under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy. These three have played under Anil Kumble, and all of them have played under Dhoni. When they were under Dhoni, these players were cricket jambhavans (veterans). Dhoni too played under Virat (Kohli),” he added.
