An emotional young fan was seen hugging the 22-year-old Afghanistan National Cricket Team spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman after the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side scripted a historic World Cup win over the England National Cricket Team.

Afghanistan and England locked horns in the 13th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday, October 15.

Afghanistan bowled out England for 215 while defending the total and earned a memorable 69-run victory in a major World Cup upset. This was only the second 50-over Cricket World Cup win for Afghanistan and it came, eight years after their last victory against Scotland in Australia.

The chief architect behind the historic win of the Afghans was none other than the star spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman. The 22-year-old delivered a sensational all-round performance and played a key role in hammering the tournament favorites and defending champions – England.

After the match, a young fan, who looked quite emotional, approached Mujeeb. The little kid was in tears and he hugged the star Afghanistan spinner. Looking at the kid crying, a member of the Afghanistan dugout quickly brought a chocolate and passed it to Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who then handed it to the young fan.

This trophy is for the people back home who are affected by the earthquake – Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Mujeeb Ur Rahman won the Player of the Match award and he attended the post-match presentation, with Rashid Khan who translated for the youngster. Mujeeb said that beating the World Cup-winning team was a very proud moment for them. He said:

“Very proud moment to be here in the World Cup and beating the champions. It’s a great achievement for the whole team, we worked hard for this day. We beat such a big team. It was a wonderful performance from the bowlers and the batters.”

Mujeeb Ur Rahman further talked about his bowling and said that he has been trying to be consistent with his lines and lengths with the new ball. He said:

“As a spinner, it’s pretty hard to bowl in the powerplay, you have only two fielders outside. That’s something I’ve been working in the nets. Bowling with the new ball and trying to be as consistent as possible.

“That’s something which has made me more effective. I am always trying to bowl stump to stump and keep it simple. We knew that the dew was going to come and play a part in the latter part. That’s why I was telling the captain to bowl me in the powerplay. We were mentally prepared.”

Mujeeb further dedicated the Player of the Match award to the people who were affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan. He said:

“This trophy is for the people back home who are affected by the earthquake in Herat. This whole win is for them.”
