MITCHELL Marsh’s 96 and Glenn Maxwell’s four wickets set up Australia’s consolation 66-run victory over India in the third and final ODI at Rajkot.

Australia batted first and got off to a flier as David Warner hit 56 off 34 balls, and although he was trapped lbw attempting a ramp off Prasidh Krishna, Australia reached 90-1 after the powerplay.

Steve Smith and Marsh manoeuvred the spin of Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav with great skill, and brought up a 100-run partnership off 93 balls.

Marsh looked set for a century, but fell on 96, chipping Kuldeep to cover. Smith’s 74 off 61 balls oozed class, before Mohammed Siraj trapped him in front with a delivery that moved in.

Jasprit Bumrah removed Alex Carey and bowled Maxwell with a fantastic yorker, before Cameron Green holed out to long-on off Kuldeep. Marnus Labuschagne’s 72 steadied the innings, and a handy 19 from Pat Cummins helped Australia to 352-7.

Rohit Sharma lashed six sixes as India reached 72-0 after the powerplay, but Sundar fell shortly after, chipping Maxwell to wide long-off. Sharma fell for a stylish 81 off 57 balls when he drilled down the ground and Maxwell took a sharp return catch.

Virat Kohli made 56 before he skied Maxwell to mid-wicket.

Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul steadied the ship with a fifty partnership, before Rahul skied Mitchell Starc to Carey, and Suryakumar Yadav then fell cheaply chipping Josh Hazlewood to mid-wicket.

Maxwell picked up his fourth wicket, clean bowling Iyer past the outside edge for 48. Cummins dismissed Bumrah, Tanveer Sangha trapped Jadeja lbw and Cameron Green sealed the contest when Siraj chipped to long-off, securing an emphatic victory. Australia broke a fivematch losing run with a confidence-boosting victory, while India slumped to a rare home defeat, but look in good shape for the World Cup having taken the series 2-1.
