Former India cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth could not believe his eyes after seeing the way MS Dhoni was hitting the ball last night in his first appearance with the bat in 307 days.

Srikkanth, who is doing commentary in Indian Premier League 2024, was not able to believe that Dhoni is a 42-year-old cricketer, still going strong and still thrashing opposing bowling line-ups. The former India captain had played 16 balls in total and maintained a sensational strike rate of 231.25.

MS Dhoni had walked into bat very late in the 2nd innings, after the fall of the 6th wicket, in at number 8. Had he got a few more balls to play in the innings, Dhoni could have finished off the game and could have guided CSK to their 3rd consecutive victory.

However, despite his death over blitz against Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar and Anrich Nortje, the reigning champions lost the contest against Delhi Capitals by 21 runs.

Everyone inside the ACA-VDCA stadium in Vizag was left awestruck as they witnessed the Vintage MS Dhoni carnage for the first time this season. Not many would have expected him to come to bat last night as the CSK batting line-up consisting of players like Ravindra, Ruturaj, Mitchell, and Rahane among others were finishing the match themselves. But when it was required, Thala did not fail to make an impression

MS Dhoni’s 37 off 16 reminded Srikkanth of Thala’s hundred against Pakistan in 2005

Kris Srikkanth was with all of us when we saw MS Dhoni turn up and hit gigantic sixes. The former was falling short of words in terms of expressing his thoughts about the 2011 World Cup-winning captain. Srikkanth applauded Dhoni for showing such greatness and power-hitting skills at the age of 42. That knock also reminded Srikkanth of the way Dhoni had scored his century against Pakistan back in 2005 at the very same venue when he was a newcomer in the Indian team.

“I don’t know how to express this. On one side, as an MS Dhoni fan, I am very happy, in the sense that what a knock! At the age of 42, someone is hitting like this, he is hitting them without any worry. Vintage Dhoni! In 2005, he hit an aggressive century against Pakistan in Vizag, he got out for 0 in the first match of his international career. In his second match (fifth), he tore into the Pakistan attack.” – Srikkanth said in his latest YT video.

“In terms of keeping, he is still the best Indian keeper. He is still taking catches nonchalantly while standing up to spinners. He is still India’s best. No. 1 is Dhoni, and No. 2 is Wriddhiman Saha, they both are still the best in the business. He made it look so easy. He is keeping well, he is batting well, he is running between the wickets well. Is he 42? I think, he will play the IPL for 2 more years, I think,” said Srikkanth.

Srikkanth hails Delhi Capitals bowling line-up but believes that MS Dhoni was up for the task

Srikkanth then appreciated the way Delhi Capitals’ bowling unit performed and how they were able to remain consistent with their game plan. In the death overs, be it Mukesh, Nortje, or Khaleel, everyone bowled fuller outside-off deliveries and that plan worked very well for the DC bowlers. However, that did not stop MS Dhoni from expressing himself as whenever possible, he picked the lengths very well and was able to get underneath the ball.

“In all fairness, Delhi bowled well. But, Dhoni’s batting was sensational. Yes, CSK lost. But it was a moral victory for CSK fans because everybody was waiting for an opportunity to see Dhoni bat.” – Srikkanth concluded.
