India’s winning run of 10 matches unfortunately came to an end in the summit clash of the ODI World Cup 2023 as Australia defeated Rohit Sharma’s men by six wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19. After the match, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to the players’ dressing room and consoled the heartbroken ‘Men in Blue’.

Mohammed Shami, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in the marquee event with 24 scalps from seven games, posted a picture of the Prime Minister on social media, trying to comfort him in the Indian dressing room. The 33-year-old pacer expressed his gratitude to the Indian fans for their support throughout the tournament and also to the Prime Minister for his kind gesture in the dressing room.

“Unfortunately yesterday was not our day. I would like to thank all Indians for supporting our team and me throughout the tournament. Thankful to PM @narendramodi for specially coming to the dressing room and raising our spirits. We will bounce back!” Shami wrote on his official ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) handle.

Indian fans had to witness their team lose a fifth ICC final in 10 years. It was a tough pill to swallow as India were the best team throughout the tournament, annihilating every opponent they faced en route to the finals. In fact, in their first game in the round-robin phase, the former two-time champions defeated Australia by six wickets but it just wasn’t to be on the night of the finals. Die-hard Indian fans voiced their support for the Indian players on social media and the Prime Minister also heaped praise on them.

“Dear Team India, Your talent and determination through the World Cup was noteworthy. You’ve played with great spirit and brought immense pride to the nation. We stand with you today and always,” the 73-year-old wrote.
