The ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 has witnessed several records being broken. Virat Kohli broke his ‘idol’ Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI hundreds scored by a player during India’s semi-final clash against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Wednesday.
Tendulkar finished his illustrious career with a record of 49 ODI centuries. Very few would have imagined that his surreal feat would someday be eclipsed. The former India captain has mentioned in several interviews that he would like one of his compatriots to break his records. 11 years after Tendulkar’s 49th century, his former teammate Virat Kohli scored a record-breaking 50th ODI hundred against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2023 to script history.
It was quite fitting that Kohli broke the magical record in the presence of Tendulkar. The Master Blaster was present at the Wankhede as Kohli scampered back for his second run to get to the special three-figure mark. The Delhi batter bowed down to show his respect to Tendulkar, who was giving him a standing ovation.
On Sunday, November 19, India are all set to play the finals of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad against Australia. Ahead of the highly-anticipated clash, Tendulkar gifted Kohli his iconic No. 10 jersey, the one he wore during his last ODI appearance.
Tendulkar and Kohli were part of the Indian side that won the ODI World Cup back in 2011. The 50-year-old will be in the stands, cheering for the Men in Blue at the largest cricket stadium in the world. He would love to see Rohit Sharma’s men getting the better of the former five-time champions in what promises to be a clash for the ages.
