Shimron Hetmyer, on Monday (April 1) took a brilliant diving catch to send back Piyush Chawla in the ongoing IPL 2024 match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians were off to a disastrous start as their top order was blown away by their former pacer Trent Boult. The New Zealand star dismissed Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir for golden ducks in the very first over to reduce the five-time IPL champions to 1 for 2.

In the second over, Ishan Kishan hit a six and four against Nandre Burger before Trent Boult struck again in the third over. The left-arm pacer dismissed Dewald Brevis for a golden duck as well to leave the home side reeling at 14 for 3. And in the very next over, Burger joined the party as well by dismissing Kishan to reduce Mumbai Indians to 20 for 4 in the fourth over.

Tilak Varma, who scored a half-century in the last game, and captain Hardik Pandya then steadied the ship with a 56-run stand. Yuzvendra Chahal broke the stand by dismissing Pandya for 34. With the team reeling at 76 for 5 in the 10th over, the Mumbai Indians team management decided to send Piyush Chawla ahead of Tim David.

However, the move did not yield the desired result as the leg-spinner could score only three off six balls before Shimron Hetmyer’s stunning catch cut short his stay at the crease.

On the first ball of the 12th over, Chawla faced a short and wide delivery from Avesh Khan. The veteran cricketer wanted to guide the ball past Shimron Hetmyer who was standing at backward point. Chawla had placed the ball well but not out of Shimron Hetmyer’s reach. The West Indies star jumped to his right and caught the ball with both hands to send back Chawla.
