Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting provided a massive update about the fitness of David Warner ahead of the game against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He said that the batter will undergo a fitness Test and they will be assessed based on that. 

Delhi Capitals suffered an injury scare during their recent game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. David Warner injured his thumb while fielding in the game at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. 

After the game, David Warner went for the scans and since then there has been no clarity about his fitness. With Delhi Capitals all set to lock horns with Gujarat Titans in their next game on Wednesday (17th April) at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad, there has been a lot of speculation about the batter’s availability. 

Head coach Ricky Ponting talked about David Warner’s fitness, saying that the X-ray didn’t show any problems but the opening batter is having a swelling around the knuckle on his left hand. He added that Warner’s availability will depend on his fitness test on the morning of the game. Speaking to reporters, he explained: 

“David did have an X-ray after the last game. That X-ray came back all clear. But, he’s got a lot of swelling around the knuckle on his left hand. We’ll give him a fitness test tomorrow morning, and keep our fingers crossed that he’s okay.” 

David Warner has been one of the top performers in the IPL 2024 for Delhi Capitals. The opening batter has scored 166 runs from 6 matches. He will be extremely important for his team going ahead into the tournament. 

David Warner, however, is not only the Delhi Capitals player who has faced injury in the ongoing IPL 2024. Earlier, Lungi Ngidi was ruled out of the tournament due to injury and then Harry Brook pulled out due to personal reasons. To worsen the case more, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh suffered a hamstring injury and went back to home.

Ricky Ponting further went on to talk about the performance of Delhi Capitals in the ongoing IPL 2024. He believes that they could’ve won five games so far as they lost some close games in the tournament. He stressed that they are working hard and are fully prepared. He added: 

“The overriding message from me to the players over the last six games is how close we’ve been. We could easily be sitting here with five wins and one loss. So, we understand how close we are and how close the tournament is, but you can’t afford to be close to being good in the IPL. 

“You’ve got to turn up and be very good every day. We know we’ve got to get better in certain areas of our cricket. And trust me, we’re working really hard every day to make sure that we’re as well prepared as we can be.”

Delhi Capitals moved to 9th on the points table in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 after their win over LSG. They now have two wins under their belt.
